Since instant messaging applications have become widespread on new generation smartphones, the way you communicate with your friends has definitely changed. By now you have practically said goodbye to SMS because most of the communication takes place via WhatsApp. Unfortunately, however, with this new technology there is also a downside: sometimes you would like to be able to communicate in peace only with one person, without having to be constantly studded with messages from others. As you used to do with the old MSN Messenger and later also with Skype, you would like to find a way to do not appear online on WhatsApp, in such a way as to send messages only when and you want and, above all, to whoever you want.

How do you say? This is exactly how things are and you are wondering if they can help you? Of course, I can do it with my eyes closed! It is not the first time that I have been asked a similar question related to WhatsApp but, unfortunately, I must immediately make one thing clear: at the present time there is no specific feature that allows you not to be online on WhatsApp. Attention, however, this does not mean that there are no equally valid alternative solutions: if you want to avoid being online on WhatsApp you can follow some precautions that I will give you in this tutorial and thus limit the activity of intrusive people.

Are you ready to get started? In the course of this guide, I will provide you with some useful tips and advice on how you can act to change the privacy of your WhatsApp account, thus limiting some actions by people who contact you too frequently. Are you ready to get started? Yup? Very well, then sit comfortably and take a few minutes of free time to carefully read my tutorial: I wish you a good reading and a good "job".

How not to be online on WhatsApp

As I mentioned in the previous lines, at the time of writing this tutorial there is no official feature that allows you to access WhatsApp in "invisible" or "offline" mode so as not to make the word "online" appear when you are using WhatsApp.

However, there are some "tricks" related to the correct use of WhatsApp settings that will allow you to use WhatsApp with some restrictions regarding your privacy.

In this regard, in the following lines I will explain step by step how to carry out these operations by explaining how to hide the last access on WhatsApp, how to hide the read receipts and, in case of extreme remedies, also how to block a contact on WhatsApp. In particular, in the latter case, by blocking a person, temporarily or permanently, you can actually make sure not to be online on WhatsApp.

How to hide the last login (Android / iOS)

One of the best options you have available regarding the possibility of increasing the privacy level of WhatsApp concerns the deactivation of the last access and that is the view related to your profile that indicates the date and time you connected last time to the messaging application.

By doing this you will avoid letting other people who use WhatsApp know the exact date and time when you last connected to the application.

To do this and then activate this limitation, you must first start the messaging application and then access the section of Settings.

Operating from an Android smartphone you can reach this section by tapping the button with the three dots symbol located at the top right and then pressing on the wording Settings that you will see appear from the drop-down menu.

If, on the other hand, you are acting as an iOS smartphone you will have to tap the button with the symbol of a gear to display the screen of Settings.

After that, from both devices, you will need to locate the wording Account and tap on it and then tap on the wording Privacy from the menu you will see on the screen.

At this point, if you want to disable the option relating to the last access on WhatsApp you have to tap on the wording Last access and select the option Nobody. Alternatively, you can also limit the display of the last accessed so that only your WhatsApp contacts can know (with the option All all the people who have your number can know instead). In the latter case, tap on the option My contacts in the section Last Access.

Keep in mind that this type of choice will be mutual: consequently if you prevent people from seeing your last WhatsApp login, you won't be able to see their last login either.

If you wish, you can change your mind at any time and restore the view you last accessed. To do this, go back to the menu Settings> Account> Privacy and then set the option Last access by tapping on the wording All.

How to hide read receipts (Android / iOS)

An option that I recommend you to consider, if you want to activate some restrictions on WhatsApp to protect your privacy is the one that will allow you to hide the read receipts, that is the very famous blue confirmation ticks that appear in correspondence with a message to indicate that it has been read.

This option can be deactivated and reactivated at any time using the Settings of the WhatsApp application.

To carry out this operation you must go to the section Settings of WhatsApp (I have already explained how to do it in the previous lines) and then tap on the wording Account and then Privacy.

Then, in the visible screen, locate the wording Read confirmations and on iOS, move the lever from OFF a ON while on Android remove the check mark to disable it.

I remind you that even this option dedicated to privacy works reciprocally with your WhatsApp contacts, consequently by deactivating the read receipts you will no longer be able to see those relating to the messages you send to your contacts. You must also keep in mind that even if you have deactivated read receipts, these will still be present in the conversations between groups and will not be deactivated.

In case you decide to go back on your steps and reactivate the option relating to the read receipt, go back to the section Settings> Account> Privacy and activate the read receipt again.

How to block a person (Android / iOS)

Since your intent is not to be online on WhatsApp, I imagine that you can also consider the possibility of taking advantage of additional privacy measures, so as to no longer be contacted by unwanted people.

In this regard, the definitive solution to avoid being contacted on WhatsApp is to block a person within this application. Through this procedure you will blacklist a contact, prevent him from seeing you online and make sure that he cannot send you messages.

The procedure that I will show you in the following lines can be performed at any time through the application for Android or iOS and the contact or contacts included in the blacklist can be unblocked at any time.

That said, the procedure for blocking a WhatsApp contact from an Android device is as follows.

Start the WhatsApp application and then go to the section Chat in such a way as to identify the conversation with the person you intend to block. Tap their conversation to view it and then tap the button with the three dots symbol which is located in the upper right corner, then tap on the wording Other and then on the button Block pressing the button again Block to confirm your willingness to perform this operation.

If you've changed your mind, you can tap the button again at any time three dots symbol and tapping on the word other, press the button Unlock.

Alternatively, you can also carry out this procedure via the section Settings application. Then tap the button with the three dots symbol which you can see on the main screen and then tap on the wording Settings> Account> Privacy> Contacts Blocked. You can now add a person to the list of Contacts blocked by tapping the button with the little man symbol at the top right and identifying the person to be blocked in the section relating to contacts.

Through this section you can unlock a previously blocked person: just tap on his name and press the button Unlock that you will see appear.

If you are using a smartphone with the iOS operating system you can proceed in an extremely simple way to block a person on WhatsApp. The first thing you need to do is go to the section Chat to locate the person you want to block.

Then open the chat started earlier and then tap on the person's name at the top to view the section Contact info. At this point, scroll down this section until you find the wording Block contact. Then tap on it and confirm this operation by pressing the button Block. If you change your mind you can go back to the Contact Info section and press the button Unblock contact.

The contact blocking procedure can also be carried out via the section Settings> Accounts> Privacy> Blocked. Through this screen click on the button Add and, find the name of the person you want to block from the contact list.

Through this section you can also unblock a person added to the blocked list of blocked contacts: you will have to tap on the name to be unblocked and swype to the right by then pressing the button Unlock which will appear laterally.
