How to delete a contact from WhatsApp

Lately I have received many messages from friends asking me how to delete a contact from WhatsApp. Evidently the way in which the application created by Jan Koum and Brian Acton manages contacts is not clear to everyone, and therefore it seems appropriate to return to the subject.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view) WhatsApp does not have a separate contact system: it analyzes the names in the phone book, detects those who already use the application and adds them to its address book. This means that to delete a name from WhatsApp, it must also be deleted from the phone book.

The only alternative solution we have at our disposal is to select the names we want to "hide" and block them. Blocking a contact in WhatsApp, however, does not mean removing it from the address book. It means preventing them from contacting us, via text messages or VoIP calls, and from viewing our status (so knowing if we are online or not). All clear? Well, then choose whether to completely delete the contacts that "bother you" or to block them only within WhatsApp and take action. It won't take long, you find all the steps you need to take outlined right below.

Delete a contact from WhatsApp on Android

As mentioned at the beginning of the post, if you want to permanently remove a contact from WhatsApp you have to delete the name from the phone book.

If you are using an Android smartphone, then start WhatsApp, select the tab Contacts from the menu at the top and select the name of the person you want to remove from the address book. At this point, "tap" the button [...] you see at the top right, select the item Show contact give the menu to compare.

Finally, press the button [...] located at the top right of the screen that opens, select the item View in the address book and continue with the removal of the contact by pressing the button first [...] which appears in the middle of the screen (always on the right) and then up Delete e OK.

Please note: if after deleting a contact from the Android address book this still appears in WhatsApp, go to the main screen of the application, press the button [...] che si trova in alto a destra e seleciona la voce Settings from the menu that opens. Next, go on Contacts, remove the check mark from the item Show all contacts and affix it again. This will force WhatsApp to update its contact list by drawing it from the Android address book.

If you don't want to delete a name from the Android address book but, at the same time, you don't want it to disturb you on WhatsApp, the only thing you can do is block it. By blocking a person on WhatsApp, he remains visible in the contact list and in the address book but cannot send you messages and cannot call you within the application (while of course he can continue to call you on the mobile phone line and can send you traditional SMS).

To block a person on WhatsApp, start the application, select the tab Contacts which is located at the top right and "tap" on his name. Then press the button [...], select the items Other e Block from the menu that opens and presses on OK per confermare l'operazione.
