Preliminary information
First illustrate what needs to be done to succeed find the IP of a device, it seems appropriate to make some clarifications: first of all, as I mentioned at the beginning of the article, you must know that an IP address is nothing more than a unique numerical address that serves to identify devices capable of connecting to a network, then to local networks and / or the Internet.
Each IP address is made up of two parts: the first identifies the network and is used for routing at the subnet level, while the second identifies, within the network, thehost (or the interface in IPv6) and any subnets and is used for local host routing once the target local subnet is reached.
Then keep in mind that IP addresses are divided into two different types: they can be dynamic, that is, they change with each connection, or static, i.e. fixed. Regardless of whether an IP address is dynamic or static, a further distinction must be made between IPs public, which identify devices on the Internet, and those local, which, on the other hand, are assigned by routers to identify the various devices within the local network (e.g. home or office network).
How to find public IP
Having made the necessary clarifications above, let's get to the heart of the matter and let's find out what needs to be done to be able to identify the address Public IP, own or others. You will find everything explained in detail below.
Find your public IP
To be able to find the public IP of the your connection to the Internet (i.e. that of the modem that is providing connection to all devices connected to your network), you can resort to using a simple online service. There are many Web tools able to reveal this type of information, personally, however, I recommend you What Is My IP Address.
In addition to allowing you to know the public IP of your connection, What Is My IP Address also shows information about the reference ISP (i.e. the operator that provides the Internet connection) and the geographical position of the user (eye, the one that is provided is not the exact location of the computer, but the location where the telephone exchange to which the connection is located is located).
You ask me how to make use of it? It's child's play: in fact, you just need to visit the What Is My IP Address home page and wait a few moments for the page to load. After that, you will be able to see your IP address under the heading Your IPv4 Address IS, next to the wording IPv4.
In the box below you will find, instead, the map with the details concerning the geographical position of reference and the information regarding the Internet provider. If when you connect to What Is My IP Address your browser asks you for permission to communicate your geographical position to the site, accept. Otherwise, the service will not be able to correctly locate your connection and show it on the map.
If you want to see even more details, click the button Show Me More About My IP which is located in the center. Once this is done, you will be redirected to a page with more precise information about the company that provides you with the Internet connection and the geographical location of the control unit. The service can be used in the same way by computers, smartphones and tablets.
Finding others' public IPs
And as for the public IP address altrui? How can I identify it? In this case, it is not possible to take advantage of online services such as the one indicated in the previous step but you have to rely on alternative "tactics". Among the most accredited, there is the possibility of taking advantage of the features attached to your client or service e-mail.
In fact, it is possible to extrapolate the IP address of the sender of an email by consulting theheader, that is to say the report in which there are all the technical details of the message. Moving on to the practice, to be able to identify the IP address of the person who sent you an email, you must open the message and follow the instructions on what to do that you find below, depending on the program / Web service you use for the e-mail management.
- Outlook Express - open the menu Fillet and click on your voice Property. In the window that opens, go to the tab Details and presses the button Original message.
- Apple Mail - click on the item Vista present on the menu bar, select the wording Message and, subsequently, that Source format.
- Mozilla Thunderbird - select the item Source of the message from the menu Show.
- gmail - click on the button with the arrow located at the top right (in the message box) and select the item Show original give the menu check if you press.
- Outlook.com - click on the drop-down menu at the top right, next to the button Reply, and select the option View message source.
- Yahoo Mail! - click on your menu Other placed at the top right and presses on View full header.
After completing the above operations, you will be able to view the sender's IP address in correspondence with the string Received: from of the report. However, keep in mind that, for senders who use Webmail, the relative IP address may be replaced by that of the mail service servers and therefore no longer correspond to the real one.
If you then own a blog or a website, you can use another valid system to identify the IP address of others. If anyone has left one or more Comments on the site, just consult the related information, those you find under the relative name / nickname. I am referring mainly to the platform WordPress (if you remember correctly, I told you about it thoroughly in my tutorial on how to use WordPress).
