You have just changed your phone number, would you like to transfer your WhatsApp account to the latter but you don't know how to do it? Have you purchased a new smartphone, would you like to copy the WhatsApp conversations you had on your old mobile to it but you don't know where to start? Don't worry, I'm here to help you.
Follow the directions I am about to give you and, in no time at all, you will learn how to transfer WhatsApp from one number to another or from one phone to another without wasting time (and without disturbing your "usual" tech-savvy friend). I assure you that it is not as difficult as you think, just a pinch of attention is enough.
Now, however, ban the chatter and let's get to work immediately! Choose the procedure that suits you best and try to put it into practice, I'm sure you will succeed without the slightest problem. By following the number change tutorial you can transfer the WhatsApp license, group subscriptions, settings and all the data contained in your personal profile to your new line. With the procedure for transferring chats, however, you can retrieve all messages (and the attachments in them) by transferring them to your new phone. Good luck!
Transfer WhatsApp to a new number
If you want transfer WhatsApp on a new phone number, then deleting your current account and transferring the subscription status, groups, profile and chat history to the new one, open WhatsApp on your "old" profile and go to the application settings .
If you don't know how to access WhatsApp settings, don't worry, it's very easy. On Android and Windows Phone just press the button (...) I will select the voice Settings from the menu that appears. On the iPhone, however, you have to select the tab Settings located at the bottom right. Then you have to "tap" on the voice Account, select the option Change number from the screen that opens and press the button NEXT which is located at the top right.
At this point you can take action: type yours old number (i.e. the phone number you are currently using) and yours New number (i.e. the number to which you intend to transfer the WhatsApp profile) in the appropriate text fields, make sure that the international code is correct and presses on end but I will complete the operation.
Now you just have to install WhatsApp on your new phone (or reinstall it on your current smartphone, in case you are only changing the number), activate it by following the initial configuration procedure of the application normally and you should find all your data as well as you left them. If you need help installing WhatsApp, check out my guide on how WhatsApp works.
Note: Tell your friends your new number, otherwise they will no longer be able to find you on WhatsApp!
Transfer WhatsApp chats
Do you still use the same phone number but have you changed your smartphone? Then I think you are interested in another type of procedure: the one to transfer WhatsApp chats from one device to another.
If you have an Android smartphone and want to transfer your conversations to another device, you can follow two different paths: take advantage of the Google Drive online backup or restore i local backups automatically generated by the application.
The simplest procedure to follow is the one related to Google Drive, but in some cases, for example when you want to return the application to an earlier state than the last automatic backup, local backups can also be useful.
Before starting work, check the status of the backups and, if necessary, start saving the chats in WhatsApp. To check the status of the backups in WhatsApp, start the application, press the button (...) located at the top right and select the item Settings from the menu that opens. Then move to Chat> Chat backup and, if you need to create a new backup, press the button Back up. If you want to include videos in the backup, put the check mark next to the item Include videos.
Now you can take action! To transfer WhatsApp messages using Google Drive, all you have to do is associate a smartphone with the same phone number and the same Google account as the phone on which the application was originally installed. Then install (or reinstall) WhatsApp, verify the phone number and accept the restoration of the backups found on Google Drive by pressing the button Restore.
If you prefer to contact local backups, go to the HomeWhatsAppDatabases folder of your old phone (or to the sdcardWhatsAppDatabases folder if your device supports memory expansion), take the file msgstore.db.crypt12 present in the latter and copy it into the same folder of the new mobile phone (which you may need to create if you have not yet installed WhatsApp on the device). If you want to return WhatsApp to an earlier state than the last backup, do not take the msgstore.db.crypt12 file, rename but one of the previous backups (msgstore– [backup date] .db.crypt8) in msgstore.db.crypt12 and copy that to the new smartphone. Before renaming the backup, delete or rename the current msgstore.db.crypt12 file.
To navigate the Android folders I recommend using the ES File Manager application. It is a free file manager that allows you to copy, move, rename and delete any type of file in an extremely simple way. You can use it to locate WhatsApp backup files, auto-send them to you by email (or save them on a cloud storage service) and place them on the memory of your new smartphone. For more information on the whole procedure read my tutorial on how to restore WhatsApp conversations, you will find everything explained there.
Once the msgstore.db.crypt12 file has been copied to the new device, install (or reinstall) WhatsApp, start the application, verify your number and accept the restoration of previous conversations, which WhatsApp will automatically detect. To prevent WhatsApp from using Google Drive instead of offline backups, connect to this web page and remove WhatsApp from applications that have access to your Google account.
Have you replaced your old iPhone with a newer model and want to restore your WhatsApp conversations? Don't worry, it's super easy.
By default, WhatsApp creates a daily backup of chats and saves it to iCloud. This means that if your new "iPhone by" is associated with the same Apple ID and the same phone number as the iPhone you used before, you can restore your discussions by simply installing (or reinstalling) the application and accepting the restoration iCloud backup, which will be detected automatically after verifying the phone number.
To check the status of WhatsApp backups, launch the application on your iPhone, select the tab Settings which is at the bottom right and move up Chat> Chat backup. To "manually" start a new backup on iCloud, press the button Back up now. If you want to include videos in the backup as well, move to ON the lever for the option Include videos. More info can be found in my tutorial on how to restore WhatsApp chats.
If you have a Windows Phone you can copy WhatsApp chats from one phone to another only if both devices support memory expansion via microSD.
To check the status of the backups, start WhatsApp, press the button (...) located at the bottom right and go up first Settings and then Chat and call. If you want to start creating a new backup, "tap" on the item backup and wait for the operation to finish.
After making the backup, move the microSD to the new smartphone, install WhatsApp and follow the initial application setup procedure. After verifying the number, agree to restore the messages from the backup by pressing the button Restore And that's it.
Note: currently there is no official procedure for transferring WhatsApp conversations from one software platform to another (eg from iPhone to Android or vice versa), you can only rely on third-party solutions which however do not guarantee certain results.
One of the few apps that allow you to transfer chats from WhatsApp from one platform to another - considered among the most reliable of all - is Wazzap Migrator for Android that allows you to transfer messages from iPhone to Android, try to take a look at it.
Alternatively, in case you want to switch the chats of WhatsApp da iPhone ad Android it is possible to take advantage of the native functionality made available by the messaging app which currently allows the transfer to devices Android brand Samsung. However, the procedure in question could soon be extended to other models as well, so I invite you to read my tutorial dedicated more specifically to the subject, to learn more about it.
