Find the IP address of the router

In order to access the router page you must first locate theIP address of the latter. The first fundamental step you must take to succeed in the enterprise is therefore to start the Web browser that you generally use to surf the net (eg Edge or Safari), type one of the following IPs in the address bar and press the key Submit on the keyboard.

The ones I have just indicated to you represent the IP addresses that in almost all cases are assigned to routers and that can be used to log in to the relative management page. If trying to “visit them” you are asked to enter your username and password or, even, you find yourself directly in front of the device management panel, then you can say that you are already satisfied: you have succeeded in completing your mission!

If not, do not despair! Most likely your router has been assigned a different IP address than the usual ones that you can still be able to find in different ways, those listed below.

    • Through the instruction booklet of the router - Browsing through the various pages of the router information booklet you should find a section indicating the exact IP address to use to access the device or a universal address, such as, used for the same purpose.

    • Using the label attached to the router - Usually the IP address to be used to access the router is also clearly indicated on a special label placed directly on the device. Typically the label is affixed under the router or to the side.

    • Via the Windows Command Prompt - The Windows Command Prompt allows you to perform various operations, including the ability to quickly and easily trace the IP address to be used to log in to the router. How you do it? Easy: open the menu Home (the Windows flag located on the taskbar at the bottom left of the screen), type cmd and press the button Submit on the keyboard. Once the Command Prompt window appears, type the command ipconfig and press the button Submit on the computer keyboard. Once this is done you will see a set of information of various kinds appear on the screen. The IP address of the router is the one you find next to the item Default gateway.

    • Via System Preferences in macOS - Even if what you are using is a Mac you can easily find the IP address of your router. To do this, just go to the system's network preferences. Then access the panel with the System preference (the gear icon located in the Dock bar), presses the icon Network attached to it and select the item relating to the type of connection you are currently using, then Wi-Fi if you have connected your computer to the router wirelessly or Ethernet if you connected your computer to the router via cable. Then click on the button Go ahead ... at the bottom right and then on the board TCP / IP in the displayed window. Once this is done, at the wording Router you will find the IP address to use to log in to the management page of your router.

Now that you have finally obtained the correct IP, open the browser, connect to the address you just obtained and you will see that you will immediately find yourself in front of the page where you can enter the login data or directly the one through which to manage all the settings of the device.

    Find your login information

At this point you should be able to enter the router page, but to change the device settings you need to enter a combination of username and password in the appropriate fields that are proposed to you on the screen.

If you haven't changed your router login details by setting a custom username and / or password, the combination to use should be admin / admin or admin / password but the data may vary depending on the make and model of router you are using.

So, in case the above combinations turn out to be incorrect, you can find the right one simply by looking at the user manual of the device or at the label affixed to it, as already done for the IP address.

However, keep in mind that, as already mentioned in the previous lines, on some router models, for example those provided by TIM, the first time you log in to the device management panel there is no need to enter the password. Just press the login button and set a custom password on the page that opens.

    Adjust the router settings

Now that you have finally managed to access the router page you are certainly wondering how to juggle the various settings available. Well, in principle you can change the default password used to access the router management panel by going to the section Administration o Safety, while going to the section that is generally referred to as wireless you can intervene on everything related to Wi-Fi connections.

By accessing the section instead Firewall o Virtual Server you can find the commands to open the doors for eMule, uTorrent and other software for P2P and not. In this regard, I suggest you read my tutorial on how to open the router ports through which I proceeded to talk to you in detail on the matter.

After making all the various and possible changes, remember to click on the button Save o Save Changes to save all changes. The router may then reboot. If so, do not worry, it is normal and after the restart everything will work without problems.

However, keep in mind the fact that each brand and model of router has its own functioning so, considering that I do not know the exact device in your possession, the indications I have just given you could also prove to be inaccurate. So, once you have logged in to the router you too must be good at being able to identify the sections of the management panel of the same where to actually go to put your hand. If you want more precise information on how to proceed on your router model, I suggest you consult the following thematic guides that I have published here on my site.

    In case of problems

Even though you have followed my instructions in detail, is there anything that is still not clear to you? Are you having problems in being able to log in to the management page of your router and would like to receive further help on what to do? I'm sorry but… don't throw in the towel just yet! Most likely this is nonsense that can be solved in a few minutes.

You ask me how? Well, first of all try to turn the router off and on again and repeat the whole procedure for accessing the device management page from the beginning. You can also try to deal with any problems by connecting the device directly to the computer via Ethernet cable.

If you can't solve it in this way either, my advice is to immediately take a peek at the aforementioned User Manual in paper format attached to the sales package of your device. If you have lost it or it was not included in the sales package, you can fix it by going to the appropriate section of support and assistance which you can find on the website of the manufacturer of your router. There you will find all the manuals of all the devices marketed and you can then receive further details about their use. Below you will find a list of all the major router manufacturers of the moment and the link to the related support and assistance page.

    • Asus
    • D-Link
    • FRITZ! Box
    • Linksys
    • Netgear
    • Sitecom
    • TP-LINK

If, on the other hand, your problem is that you do not remember the combination of username and password to use and you cannot find the information you need either in the user manual of the device or on any labels affixed to it, you can try to contact the site. Internet Router passwords. It is a portal that collects the predefined username and password combinations of all the main models of routers and modems in the world.

To use it, connected to its main page through the link I just provided, select a brand of router from the drop-down menu Select Router Manufacturer e pulsing sul pulsating Find password. On the page that will subsequently open, identify the router model in your possession and find out what is the combination of username and password necessary to access its management panel, taking note of what is reported in correspondence with the relative columns.

If, on the other hand, you are having problems because you have changed the combination of username and password to be used in order to access the configuration page of the router but you cannot remember the new data you had chosen, the one thing you can do is reset the device in such a way as to restore it to factory conditions and therefore also restore the default username and password.

To do this, in most cases just take a toothpick (or any other thin and sharp object) and press the reset button (the small black one usually placed on the back of the device) for about ten seconds. Once this is done, all the lights on the modem will begin to flash and then they will turn off and on again and stabilize. At that point you will finally be able to access the device with the default username and password and you can also start using and configuring the router again as I explained to you in the previous lines.
