How to find a song without knowing the words

Let's see first how to find a song without knowing the words. For this purpose, you can use various applications suitable for the purpose, such as the ones you find illustrated below.

    Shazam

One of the best solutions you can turn to to find a song whose title, words or artist you don't know is Shazam. In case you've never heard of it, this is an app owned by Apple (also available as a desktop client) which is able to "listen" to a song and recognize its title, album and artist.

To use it, you need to install the relevant app on your Android or iOS device and launch it. Then tap the button Continue, present on its welcome screen, and grant it access to the microphone (this is necessary only at the first start).

At this point, in the screen that opened, tap the button depicting the logo on Shazam (located in the center of the screen), place your smartphone or tablet near the source from which the song of your interest is playing and wait for it to be recognized.

If Shazam recognizes the song, it will indicate its title, the album it belongs to, the artist who sings it, etc. It will also provide you with links to stream it or buy it (eg. Spotify, Apple Music, Etc.).

Would you like to be able to use Shazam on your computer? At the time of writing it is possible to do this only on Mac, as the application for Windows 10 is no longer available.

To proceed from your Mac, go to the Shazam page on the Mac App Store, click on the button Ottieni / Installa and, if necessary, confirm the download of the application by entering the Password of your Apple ID or with the touch ID (if your Mac has a fingerprint sensor).

Once the Shazam application is installed and launched on your Mac, grant it access to the microphone by clicking the button OK, then click on service logo located in the macOS menu bar (top right) and click on yours again logo present in the opened box.

Shazam will listen to the song being played and, if it recognizes it, in addition to indicating its title, the album it belongs to and the artist who sings it, it will also provide you with the link to purchase it. For more information on how Shazam works, please read the guide I have dedicated entirely to the service.

    Crab

You have a iPhone, an iPad or Mac? If so, know that you can find a song using Crab, Apple's virtual assistant, which integrates "stock" Shazam.

To proceed, launch Siri and ask: "What song is this?". Then bring the device close to the source from which the song is playing and wait for it to be identified.

If this happens, within a few seconds, Siri will show you the title of the song and will allow you to listen to it in streaming or buy it online, by pressing on a special link.

How to find a song by singing it

You do not have the possibility to play the song whose title you want to know and therefore you would like to know how to find a song by singing it? To do this, I recommend that you use SoundHound: an excellent service which, in addition to integrating a useful function for recognizing the songs being played, is also able to identify those that the user hums.

The app is free but, to remove the banner ads and access some extra features, the purchase of SoundHound∞, which costs € 7,99 one-off.

How does it work? I'll explain it to you right away! After installing and starting SoundHound on your Android or iOS device, press the button Start and allow the app to access the microphone and position of your device. Next, tap on the logo on SoundHound, bring your smartphone or tablet to your mouth and sing the song you intend to find.

Within seconds, SoundHound should be able to find the song you are singing. If it recognizes it, it will show you the title and the links to play it on the main streaming music services (eg. Apple Music, Spotify o YouTube).

As an alternative to Soundhound you can also use the Google app for Android, which allows you to identify songs simply by whistling or humming them. To use this function, start the app, click on the icon microphone, grant the relative permissions (if required), tap on the item Search for a song and whistle or hum the song you want to find. Easy, right?

Since, very often, in the descriptions of the music videos featured on YouTube their lyrics are also present, you may be able to locate the song of your interest by looking for the phrase you remember in the famous video sharing service owned by Google.

To do this, start YouTube on your Android or iOS device or, if you prefer, go to the main page from your browser and, in the Campo di Ricerca placed at the top, type the phrase of the song you remember.

You have signed up for a subscription Apple Music? In this case, know that you can take advantage of a function integrated in the music streaming service of the Cupertino giant to be able to identify a song starting from the text.

To do this, start the app Music on your iPhone or iPad, tap the button Search at the bottom right, type the text of the song of your interest in the Campo di Ricerca which is located at the top and, after selecting the tab Apple Music (top left), presses the blue button search located at the bottom right.

Under the title of the song, in correspondence with the wording Text, you will also see part of the text you searched for and which is present in the passage in question.

Of course, the same function is also available on PC, using iTunes or the application Music of macOS 10.15 Catalina and later.

    Google

Even the "good old man" Google it can be useful to search for the title of a song, as long as you remember at least a portion of the song's text: to do so, go to the main page of the famous search engine and, in the bar in the center of the page, type the part of the song lyrics that you remember.

I advise you to put the text in quotation marks (ex. "lyrics of the song you are looking for"), so as to refine the search and have a better chance of being able to trace the exact title of the same. Then press the button Search with Google and, on the page that opens, locate the song of your interest among the search results, if any.
