How to save WhatsApp chats

Preliminary information

By default, WhatsApp creates an encrypted backup copy of all user conversations on a daily basis. The chats can be stored locally (i.e. on the smartphone memory) or on a cloud storage service (therefore on the Internet), depending on the settings and the operating system used.

Furthermore, by accessing the application settings it is possible to select the frequency with which to backup all conversations and choose whether to include videos in the backups (which take up a lot of space, so they tend to quickly saturate the cloud spaces, I warn you ).

Apart from automatic backup, I point out that, if you need it, you can also select chats and forward them via email to yourself (or to another person), in order to keep a copy to read outside of WhatsApp. In this way, however, it is not possible to restore chats on other devices or in other WhatsApp installations made on the same device.

Is everything clear so far? Well, then let's ban the chatter and see how to save WhatsApp conversations on the various platforms.

Save WhatsApp chats on Android

If you want to create a backup copy of your conversations on WhatsApp and use a smartphone Android, you have two different solutions at your disposal to choose from. Depending on what your preferences and needs are, you can save chats by creating a online backup or locally; alternatively you can send a copy by email. Find everything you need to know about it right below.

Save WhatsApp chats via backup

As I told you, to create a backup copy of your conversations on WhatsApp, you can opt for the data backup through the specific functionality integrated in the application. The latter will allow you to make a copy of your conversations on your Google Drive account (therefore on the Internet), but also locally.

Regardless of what your choice may be, know that backup, unlike the solution that I will propose to you in the next chapter, is the only way to restore WhatsApp conversations in case you want to reinstall the app on your smartphone or decide to use this messaging service on another device. But let's go in order.

If you want to know how to save whatsapp chats on google drive, the operation to follow is very simple, as well as advantageous. The Google servers, in fact, take care of keeping a copy of all WhatsApp data, allowing them to be restored on new devices or new installations of WhatsApp on the same device. The important thing is that the device in use is associated with the same phone number and the same Google account as the one used to generate the backup.

The downside of backups made with Google Drive is that you have no control over them: you must know, in fact, that it is not possible to choose which date to report your conversations to, as only the last backup made manually or automatically is kept. .

Having said that, to proceed with the activation of the backup of the chats on Google Drive, start the app of WhatsApp, presses the icon ⋮ located at the top right and select the item Settings, from the pane you see. At this point, tap on the items Chat> Chat backup and select Google Account, in order to associate a Google account on the smartphone.

Through the voice Backup to Google Drive, you can now choose the frequency of automatic backups (daily, weekly o monthly) or set the manual mode (Just how much I tap Back Up). Also make sure the option Backup via is set to Wi-Fi onlyotherwise you may have unwanted data consumption on 3G / 4G / 5G network caused by WhatsApp backups.

Once you have set up the backup on Google Drive, you can perform it manually as many times as you want, by pressing the button Back up. I warn you that you can also include videos in the chat in your backup. This option can be enabled by moving to ON La Levetta to Fianco della Dicitura Include videos. This, however, will result in a larger backup size, especially if you prefer the backup copy also from the mobile network.

Regarding the operation of save WhatsApp chats locally, on the other hand, it can be a convenient solution to restore, from time to time, even older backup copies than the last one that is manually or automatically generated.

However, it is good to keep in mind the fact that any theft / loss of the smartphone would result in the definitive loss of all conversations. Furthermore, restoring chats is much more cumbersome than when using Google Drive, as the restoration process is manual and errors can occur that can make the backup unusable.

To restore WhatsApp conversations via Google Drive you simply need to install (or reinstall) the WhatsApp app, taking care to use the same phone number and the same Google account.

If you are interested in saving WhatsApp chats by creating only one local backupinstead, do the following: in section Backup of chats of the Settings di WhatsApp, make sure the item Backup to Google Drive the option is set Mai. Alternatively, if you have never indicated a Google account for WhatsApp backup, this will only happen locally.

To restore WhatsApp conversations using the local backup feature, copy the file msgstore.db.crypt12 from the HomeWhatsAppDatabases folder of the phone currently in use (or rename one of the files in this way msgstore- [data] .db.crypt12 related to previous backups) to the HomeWhatsAppDatabases folder of the smartphone on which to retrieve the conversations (you may have to create it manually after installing WhatsApp). Keep in mind that the same phone number as the one on which the backup was generated must be associated on the WhatsApp app.

Once this is done, disable any access to WhatsApp in the management panel of your Google account (so that the app does not try to restore the Google Drive backup instead of the local one) and install / reinstall WhatsApp on the device on which you have copied backup: During the initial setup process, the local backup should be detected and you should be given the option to restore it.

Save WhatsApp chats via single export

As I mentioned at the beginning of the guide, if you wish you can also export one or more conversations made on WhatsApp via email (or other services) so that you can also access them from your computer. To do this, just use the appropriate function in the application. I'll explain immediately how to use it.

To save WhatsApp chats via email (an operation that can only be done with one conversation at a time), open the app of the famous messaging service, tap the button with the three dots collocato in alto a destra and seleziona la voce Settings from the menu that appears. Then, tap on the item Chatpiggy back his Chat history and then select Export chats.

At this point, choose the conversation on WhatsApp you want to save, specify whether to include multimedia attachments (photos, videos and audio files) in the message and auto-sent the conversation via email. I remind you that you can also choose another file sharing service, such as another messaging app or a cloud storage service. Easier than that, right?

Keep in mind that when a conversation on WhatsApp is exported via an e-mail message, the messages are saved in the form of .txt file while multimedia attachments keep their original format. This means that you can freely consult such contents but not restore them in new WhatsApp installations.

Su iPhone it is not possible to save WhatsApp chats locally. The conversations are in fact archived exclusively on iCloud, where they remain available for recovery after reinstalling the app. Given the impossibility of making local backups, on the iPhone it is therefore not possible to choose the date to which to report the status of the conversations.

To save WhatsApp chats on iPhone via iCloud, then access the home screen or the app Library of your "iPhone by", press the app icon of WhatsApp and select the scheda Settings located at the bottom right. Afterwards, go on Chat, select the voice Backup of chats e pulsing sul pulsating Back up now.

If you want to include videos in your backups, just bring up ON the lever next to the item Include videos but keep in mind that in doing so the backups will be much "heavier" and slower to create.

To adjust the frequency with which WhatsApp should perform backups to iCloud automatically, select the item Automatic backup from the application menu and set a cadence of type daily, weekly o monthly.

To restore WhatsApp conversations via iCloud, all you have to do is install (or reinstall) WhatsApp on an iPhone associated with the same phone number and the same Apple ID as the "iPhone by" used to generate the backup.

For more information on the procedure to carry out, follow the instructions contained in the guide on how to restore WhatsApp conversations.

Save WhatsApp chats via single export

If, on the other hand, you want to self-send conversations via email or through another service, so that you can also read them from your computer, proceed as follows: open WhatsApp, select the scheda Chat and swipe from right to left on the discussion to save. Then press the button Other that appears on the side and selects the item Export chats from the menu that is subsequently shown to you.

Finally, choose whether or not to attach the media files (i.e. photos, videos and audio recordings) to the message, tap on E-mail or any other file sharing service, such as an instant messaging app or cloud storage service. Since it wasn't that hard?

Also in the case of iOS, keep in mind that, when a conversation made on WhatsApp is exported through the procedure mentioned above, the messages are saved in the form of .txt file. Multimedia attachments, on the other hand, keep their original format. Clearly, these files can be consulted freely but cannot be used to restore chats in new WhatsApp installations.
